The Picture of the Savior

Christ with the Children

On one occasion, a woman on her way home from an appointment felt prompted to go see a young friend of hers in the hospital who was dying of cancer. However, since she had just been there two days before, she brushed it aside. But it came again. This time she turned her car around and headed straight for the hospital, concluding there must be some urgent need or an emergency. While enroot, she was prompted again, this time to stop at a church bookstore and purchase a gift for him. She purchased, among other things, a beautiful and touching painting of the Savior surrounded by little children.

When she arrived at the hospital, she found to her surprise – Greg was resting comfortably and visiting with family members. After assuring herself that all was well, she left the painting and went home, wondering all the way why she had felt such a prompting, considering that she and her husband had been scheduled to visit in two days anyway. It turned out to be the last time she ever saw him. She and her husband were unable to get back on the appointed day. Greg was released from the hospital to go home where he died shortly thereafter.

Still, she wondered about the prompting until one day after the funeral Greg’s mother related the following incident:

In the final hours of his life as he had lain awake in the middle of the night crying because of the unbearable pain, she had walked in and found him in his agony, tightly clutching the precious picture of the Savior and the children.
